Millwood Cottage
Millwood Cottage was built in 1989 by Ian and Veronica Raffan who had decided it was time to retire, move out of East London and enjoy their Golden Years taking daily strolls on the unspoilt beaches of Kaysers. Ian & Veronica had visited Arniston and loved the little cottages which inspired their plans for Millwood Cottage. Sadly Veronica only got to enjoy 5 years of this bliss as she passed away in 1994. Ian stayed on and became very involved in setting up the Conservancy of Tyolomnqa and the protection of the Cape Oyster Catcher. He participated in the Kaysers Beach Rate Payers Association of which he was the Chairman for a couple of years. He was instrumental in acquiring municipal water for Kaysers as previously Kaysers had relied on a borehole for its water but with the growth of Kaysers this became unsustainable and on a number of occasions Kaysers residents ran out of water during the holiday season.
Ian was a larger than life character with many interests and a love of reading. His door was always open to all and sundry and he regaled hilarious stories of learning his trade of plumbing from his Scottish immigrant father, hunting in Bolo Reserve, getting up to all sorts of shenaningans in his youth and in later years, traveling to Scotland and barging down the rivers of England with his friend, Mickey Osner (Kat Leisure). Mickey regularly holidayed at Kaysers Beach having spent much of his childhood holidays here. Ian loved life and loved the simple way that he was able to live at Kaysers Beach. Sadly he passed away in November 2011, followed by his friend, Mickey Osner in 2014. Kaysers misses these 2 legends immensely. Millwood Cottage then became the property of Ian's step-daughter and step-son-in-law, Lyndsay & Peter Walker (www.maplegrove.co.za) whose cottage 'Millwood Too' is next door. Lyndsay's sister lives here and manages Millwood Cottage for new owner, Arnold Rabie who bought Millwood Cottage in March 2018. Arnold lives in Bloemfontein.
